Closing the Gap
Why it’s not necessarily less expensive anymore to manufacture abroad

Manufacturing in North America has become a more viable option than thought of in the past. More and more the cost of manufacturing abroad and the wait time involved is on the rise due to several factors including increased shipping costs coupled with worldwide labour and power shortages. All these factors combined are causing factories in countries like China and India to steadily increase prices, delay production and increase shipping times.

Power shortages in China and India
As temperatures rise over the summer months in countries such as China and India, and the middle class population size continues to expand exponentially, so does the energy requirement in these countries. The local Governments are restricting their factories’ power quotas in order to ensure the domestic market is properly looked after. At the same time as these countries become more westernized, the domestic consumption is on the rise and Factories have begun to divert production to the local market as they can earn higher profits and avoid all the problems associated with exporting.

Labour Shortages in Far East Factories
Research completed in our Far East factories found a widespread labour shortage. Factories are unable to employ enough workers to complete the goods for the current orders.  We (the Western world) have always viewed these countries as having a limitless labour market, but now workers are more able to decide where and when they work, lead by new Government incentives. The majority of workers are now choosing to work in their home area, instead of travelling to large cities for prolonged work periods. Many factories have reacted quickly by moving their production facilities to more rural areas and using the local labour pool. However, for this year, these moves are too late.

Shipping Overseas
Shipping has become progressively more difficult since the start of 2010. During the recession, shipping lines removed vessels from service, and even when where there was an upturn in business, decided that they could increase their profitability by restricting the supply of vessels and increasing their prices. In addition, they have also reduced the speed of their vessels to save on fuel costs, dramatically increasing transition times by up to 50 days. The shipping lines have further exacerbated everyone’ suffering by re-introducing the peak season surcharge, an increase in their base rates, and charges for 20ft containers and 40ft high cube containers with effect from the 1st July.

All these components have resulted in many factories missing order deadlines for their current season.
