What are Tai Chi Wheels?
Tai Chi wheels are based on a common movement in Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong called “Wave Hands Like Clouds”. Chi or Qi – which refers to the energy or lifeforce – is cultivated and dispersed throughout the body by using deep breathing and gentle movement. To begin your feet should be shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and your tailbone should be tucked under. It should feel as though your body is suspended by a string from the top of your head – spine straight. Proper posture ensures that the chi is able to move freely through the body. Breathe deeply and move slowly.
There are 3 variations to this movement:
Upper Body Movement: To perform the movement you place your left palm at the top of the left wheel, and your right palm at the bottom of the right wheel. Now you will form gentle circles with your arms – one hand moving clockwise, and one hand moving counterclockwise – either toward each other or away from each other. The textured wheel will massage the palms of the hands to stimulate blood flow, and the arm movement will gently stretch and rotate the arms and shoulders.
Lower Body Movement: Once you are comfortable with the upper body movement you can engage the lower body. Move your body weight from side to side in a swaying motion – moving toward the right as your right hand reaches the top of the wheel and to the left when the left hand reaches the top of the wheel. You will form very small figure eights with the hips as you sway gently from side to side.
Head Movement: To stretch your neck muscles you may choose to turn your head in the direction of your hip movement.
These movements should never be done with force – you should always move easily and effortlessly with the flow of your body. Once you become accustomed to the movements, they can also be used as a meditation.
Benefits for Everyone
Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong have been used for thousands of years to promote physical health and emotional well-being throughout China. In recent years it has become very popular in Western Countries as a low impact exercise and meditation. The slow rotations of the shoulders and arms will help to loosen tight muscles and ligaments and promote flexibility in the upper body. The swaying of the hips will stimulate digestion and circulation, and the neck movements will help relieve tension.
Benefits for Seniors
Tai Chi Wheels are a very low impact exercise that can be practiced at any age. Studies have found that simple exercises like these can reduce arthritis pain, lower blood pressure, increase stability and mobility to name a few. Continued practice of Tai Chi and Qigong commonly leads to elevated moods and an increased sense of well-being.
